The STC applied for this grant in February 2013.
This announcement is the first offical notification of being awarded this grant.
The federal funds will go to improve portions of the American Discovery Trail in Gallatin and Pope Counties.
The funds from the federal Recreational Trails Program in the amount of $200,000 will be used to re-route and improve 5.4 miles of horse and hiking trails in the Shawnee National Forest.
The STC dedicated funds in the application as partail payment for this project. Our funding came from a grant awarded in spring of 2013 by the Illinois Equine Board for the amount of $12,500.
The Forest Service had to dedicate FS funds also as part of the the application for this grant.
It's estimated that the total cost of the project will be $250,000.
Two equestrian trail heads will also be developed to accommodate parking for five truck/horse trailer combinations at two separate areas.
